The Green School
The Survey for young people is here---à 'Active Louth' Children and Young People Survey
We are delighted to announce that St. Malachy’s G.N.S. have just received their 6th Green Flag! On Wednesday, 21st May, Mrs Duffy, and three girls from the Green School committee - Isabelle, Amelia and Sienna collected the Green Flag for Global Citizenship Litter and Waste at the Green School ceremony in the Fairways hotel. We will be working on our 7th flag in the new school year.
Green Flag History in our School
In October 2010, St. Malachy’s G.N.S. joined An Taisce Green Schools Programme. Mrs Tuite was the Green School Co-ordinator and guided the school to receiving their first flag for Litter and Waste in December 2011 . Miss Martin (aka Mrs Duffy) became the new Green School Co-ordinator and followed up two years later with the Energy flag in May 2014, the Water Flag in May 2016, the Travel Flag in May 2019, the Biodiversity Flag in May 2022 and now the Global CitizenshipLitter and Waste Flag in May 2025. The school will be working on their seventh flag in September 2025.
To achieve each of these flags we follow the Green school 7-step programme:
- Set up a Green school committee
- Environmental Review
- Action Plan
- Monitoring and Evaluation
- Curriculum Work
- Involving and Informing
- Green Code
For each flag we created a green code. We ran a competition to see who could come up with a good slogan. Here are all of our Green Codes:
Scrunch it up, give it a spin and throw it in the litter bin
Energy misused cannot be excused.
Slow the flow and save H 2 O
Walk, cycle or scoot. Encourage your class to win the golden boot.
| Biodiversity | We’re Green, We’re Clean, We are the FRIARY TEAM, And we are Eco-Friendly Keen. |
