Travel Events 2021
National Bike Week took place between 13th and 17th September, with the National Bike Day on Wednesday 15th. Pupils were encouraged to cycle to school during the week. There are some photos below of the girls arriving on their bikes. Bikes were stored at the bike rack which we got when we were doing our Travel Flag. All the girls that came to school by bike were put into a raffle to win a prize for Smyths Toy Store. Our winner was Sienna from Ms Mc Nally's 4th class who cycled into school everyday during the week. Well done Sienna.
Second class learned all about bike safety this week and made posters to celebrate National COW Day! Some of their work and posters are shown below in the photo gallery. All classes tried our Guess the Bike competition to win a homework pass for their class. The winners were Mrs McManus's 4th class who got 6 of the 9 bikes correct. Enjoy your day off homework! Travel Events 2020
On National Scoot to School Day (11th March 2020), 70 pupils got out either their scooters, rollerblades, skateboards, rollerskates and heelies to get to school. To get as many people as possible to take part, the Green School Committee decided to ask Miss Galligan to give a homework pass to anybody taking part and also to allow people to choose rollerblades, skateboards and rollerskates as well as scooters. Thank you to all the girls who participated. We hope that they may choose scooting as an option for getting to school.
The Golden Boot was awarded to the class with the most participants. This was Miss Galligan's 5th class with 14 girls taking part.
At 10 o'clock we allowed the girls go out to the yard on their scooters, rollerblades, rollerskates, heelies and skateboards and have some fun. Here are some photos of their time out in the yard.
The Walking Bus Diary
Day 1: (Thursday, 7th February 2019)
Today was the very first outing or our Walking Bus. 80 pupils hopped on board the Friary Express at Tesco Car Park. We got on our hi-vis jackets and handed up our bus passes. The bus left at 8:50 and we made it in plenty of time for school.
Day 2: (Friday, 8th February 2019)
Despite the rainy start to the day, 74 pupils once again joined the Walking Bus to get to school. The wind was too strong for our canopy to stay up but we had our horn with us today. Here we are arriving at the school ready for a busy day.
Day 3: (Monday, 11th February 2019)
After the weekend, 62 pupils remembered to get on the Walking Bus. It was a chilly Monday morning when we all met up at TESCO Car Park. Everybody was in good spirits as we made our way to school.
Day 4: (Tuesday, 12th February 2019)
A cold but dry morning saw us once again walking together to school on the Walking Bus. We had some new faces joining us today. Three new faces took the helm and Sienna got a lot of use of our horn, letting everyone know that the Friary Walking Bus was in town.
Day 5: (Wednesday, 13th February 2019)
We’re half way through the BIG TRAVEL CHALLENGE now. We had more join our bus today. Ticket inspectors were out in force checking for the bus passes. We had three new leaders at the front today that moved us along quickly. The lollipop man thought we were earlier than usual.
Day 6: (Thursday, 14th February 2019)
Today saw a huge number of pupils join our walking bus. We had 124 pupils on board. The bus was that long only half of the bus got across at the traffic lights. The other half had to wait for the lights to turn red before crossing again. However, we got to meet back up together in Wynne’s terrace to cross with the lollipop man in one go.
Aidan from the Argus was there to take our photo for the newspaper. We should be in next week’s edition.
Day 7: (Friday, 15th February 2019)
Everyone was in good spirits when we met up this morning. Although we weren’t as many as yesterday we still had a crowd of about 80 on board. The weather was once again in our favour. The back of the bus were singing along to our ‘Walking Bus Song’.
Day 8: (Monday, 25th February 2019)
The Walking Bus was back in action after the midterm break. A good crowd turned up again for our walk to school. We’ve been really lucky with the weather once again. We arrived earlier than usual at the school showing that we’re walking quicker now that we know the route.
Day 9: (Tuesday, 26th February 2019)
The penultimate day of our BIG TRAVEL CHALLENGE! It was a lovely, sunny morning today compared to this time last year when there was snow. We’ve found our stride now and it’s such an easy, carefree atmosphere as we strolled to school.
Day 10: (Wednesday, 27th February 2019)
The final day of the BIG TRAVEL CHALLENGE! A huge number came out to support us on our walk to school. We had 114 pupils on the bus. It has been a lovely walk in the morning and we were blessed with good weather each day. Thanks to all who took part and helped make this a really enjoyable experience.
The walking bus will be back in action on our WOW days.
