Maths Week 2025
Maths Week 2025 took place from 13th to 17th October. Throughout the week we took part in fun maths activities with a particular focus on data.
On Monday, we counted the number of sweets in Celebrations and Miniature Heroes tins and created bar charts to show the results. We also played several maths games: Dots and Squares, Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe and Sprouts.
Dots and Squares involves drawing a 6×6 grid and taking turns to complete squares. The person with the most completed squares wins.
Sprouts starts with four dots. Players take turns joining two dots with a line and adding a new dot in the middle of the line. Lines cannot cross each other, and each dot can have a maximum of three lines attached to it.
Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe is a larger, more strategic version of the traditional noughts and crosses game.
We also completed daily esti-mysteries to strengthen our estimation skills.
During the week, we studied several famous mathematicians, including Leonhard Euler, Carl Gauss, Leonardo Fibonacci, William Hamilton, Ada Lovelace, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson. One well-known story about Gauss is that when he was seven years old, his teacher asked the class to add all the numbers from 1 to 100—a task meant to take a long time. Gauss, however, solved it in under a minute by noticing a clever pattern. We tried this challenge ourselves, both with and without a calculator, to see how difficult it would be. Julie was our fastest using a calculator, finishing in four and a half minutes.
Across the school, Maths Week included several events such as guessing the number of sweets in a jar, the number of books in the school library, and the total number of books read on Accelerated Reader up to Maths Week. Alexa in our class correctly guessed that there were 151 sweets in the jar. There was also a Maths Trail organised for each class, with Hallie achieving the most correct answers. In addition, our class contributed to a mixed-team school maths quiz held in the hall, with one of our classmates earning a place on the second-place team.
Overall, it was a busy, enjoyable and exciting week! Check out the photos below on our Maths activites.
