Visit to Dundalk Fire Station

On Wednesday, 12th November, we visited the Dundalk Fire Station as part of our exploration of local community services. When we first arrived, firefighters Harry and Gavin welcomed us and brought us into the main building. The first thing we noticed was the strong smell of smoke coming from the fire gear. Their turn-out gear is stored right by the entrance so they can get dressed quickly and jump onto the fire engine during an emergency.

Gavin demonstrated how fast firefighters have to suit up, and then the class had a chance to try on a helmet and jacket. We were also surprised by how heavy the breathing apparatus cylinder is—the same one they carry on their backs when entering a fire.

Next, we moved into the fire engine bay, where all the fire trucks are kept. Harry showed us the different types of equipment stored in each engine and was impressed by the thoughtful questions the girls asked. After that, we headed out to the back yard, where we got to spray the hoses and even climb inside a fire truck.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t see the fireman’s pole because a training session was taking place. However, we learned a lot about fire safety and fire extinguishers, and we even received some fire-themed goodies to take home.

Overall, it was a fantastic day, and everyone enjoyed the visit.
